The plot begins with Bhaskor diagnosing his Delhi belly and ends when he finally empties his bowels, literally. Although one cannot call the film preachy, it does convey a message or two. And that is what the primary theme of the film is, and it slightly preaches that towards the end. Piku takes care of Bhaskor like a child SHOULD take care of her parent. Story of a septuagenarian Bhaskor (Bachchan) who is more concerned about his health issues, especially his holiday tummy, has a daughter named Piku (Padukone). Piku may have taken the subject of constipation quite too seriously, but it really is a realistic depiction of (familial) relationships. Go watch it for sure.The trailers told us what to expect, and the film definitely lives up to what it endorses. As it is now though it is a nice small breath of fresh air. One wishes it had a little more meat, a little more heft to it. Piku leaves you with a smile, wanting for something more. We have the warmth and charm of an old city crumbling at its seams, yet havent we already seen Kolkata enough on screen by now?
There is a lovely story untold between Deepika and Irrfans characters, an angle criminally unexplored, especially on the road trip they take together to kolkata. What is missing though in the film is the fact that it takes all the good things going for it for granted refusing to make an effort to dissecting insights and fleshing out the unsaid. Potty talk that is cute and thankfully not crass, add to the story effectively. Irrfan with his subdued presence makes for a good foil to the hyper father and daughter angles. Deepika is at ease as the daughter, modern, outwardly, traditional in the same breath too.
Amitabh as the father, a tad overplaying the bong bit, is delightful and real. What Soojit gets right is the heart of the film- its warm core is bang on the buck giving us moments of real slices of life, not staged situations.
